Cause and Effect
…borrowing this subtitle from Peter Molnar’s 1990 paper about “The rise of mountain ranges and the evolution of humans: a causal relation?”
My 2025 season may have not been the best I ever had, but I experimented with a few things that simply kept me curious about what the human body AND brain are able to achieve.
1) Istria 100 (169km, +/-6600m): DNF 🙁
2) Hochstaufen Trailrun (18,7km, +/-1350m): 2:13:44 h, 17th place (1st in age group) 😉
3) Lavaredo 120k (120km, +/-5800m): 15:41:27 h, 40th place
4) UTMB (176km, +/-9900m): 31:12:53 h, 213th place
5) Alpine Team Trail (23km, +/-1523m): 2:18:13 h, 5th place 😉
In total I only competed in 5 races, of which I only used poles and a pack/vest in a single one of them. I DNFed this one. I did not finish the 100 Miles of Istria.
I made it to the finish line in all the other 4 races WITHOUT poles and WITHOUT a vest/pack on my back. So obviously one may argue I am a 100% better off WITHOUT using poles and a pack. Maybe I am. And definitely I like to run WITHOUT a pack on my back.
On the other hand, one may argue running UTMB without poles is just stupid. I guess it was more about no pack there; and the no poles were a simple result of no pack. Still, I really appreciated the simple act of running and no need to think about when to use poles. For the two shorter races it was an obvious decision to go without pack and without poles and I felt good in both of these races. Based on my average race distances I did since 2005 and my ever so slightly increasing age, one may argue that those shorter races should not suit me anymore. I admit that I had really fun doing those and might sprinkle in such “short” races in the seasons to come.
Coming back to the longer stuff – the 100+ km races – that I like a lot: all those did not go to plan really. I guess I had higher expectations in all of them. Istria was simply an off day and unfortunately not too much to learn from besides reducing mental load prior to such races. Let’s see if that works out better in 2026. Lavaredo was a cool (ok, pretty hot) day out and I really enjoyed the race till km 80. Thereafter I somewhat fell apart and struggled to get to the finish line. Loved to cross that one with our little Lady Lu. Lesson there: running without a pack is pretty nice and definitely not the reason I faded towards the latter stages of that race. Learning number two: get back into racing mode after commiserating about not having a great day.
So back to UTMB: It was so cool to be back at the start line in Chamonix, and the first night was just hilarious. There, I worked through a big low after Champex-Lac and made it to Trient in good spirits. However, I failed to recognize how depleted I was in calories. Something I definitely paid for in the remainder of that race. In fact, my brain was fatigued way more than my body and in hindsight a gel or two (or ten) might have kicked me into higher gear. Long story short: I would do those races again WITHOUT a pack and maybe WITHOUT poles, but with a way bigger emphasis on my mental game (that involves carbs to some degree too).
Coming back to the title of this little mind dump: Cause and effect. Cause I ran much of my season 2025 WITHOUT a pack and WITHOUT poles and from the results standpoint this was beneficial, it had no effect in improved or imparied performance; it simply helped in remaining curious about what this body of mine and this brain of mine are possible to do.
Staying curious and keeping things simple (not necessarily convenient) is IMHO a potentially good strategy to attack the 2026 season as well. My 22nd season of running long. Looking forward to it. Hope you do too!
To all of you: season’s greetings and best wishes for the New Year! See you out there on the trails somewhere.
